NILE began in 1967 at Pays Auction Yards with an event to showcase the region's vast livestock industry. The new event was named Northern International Livestock Exposition, which over the years, has been shortened by convenience to the acronym "NILE." In 1968 NILE added a commercial replacement heifer and feeder cattle sale, which continues today as the Top of the Rockies Sale at PAYS. The organization branched out with a move into the MetraPark facilities in 1976, allowing NILE to expand its format to eventually include trade shows, horse shows and sales, a professional rodeo and more. In 1993 NILE added a Bull Riders Invitational in the spring that is now part of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) elite tour known as the Built Ford Tough Series, limited to the 45 cowboys in the world. The expansion of the MetraPark facilities in 1986 established NILE as one of the top livestock shows and rodeos in the region.

The NILE ProRodeo is currently ranked among the world's top 50 rodeos, based on prize money payout. The NILE ProRodeo draws top contestants in all seven professional rodeo events, as cowboys and cowgirls across the nation compete to earn a slot in the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Spectators and exhibitors
from 24 states and 6 Canadian provinces regularly attend NILE.
